Rieko Ioane in line for more gongs


Several Aucklanders are up for gongs at next week’s ASB (New Zealand) Rugby Awards.

Rieko Ioane, at 20, fresh from winning the World Rugby breakthrough player of the year and the Maori senior sportsman of the year, is up for the coveted Kelvin R Tremain Memorial Trophy for New Zealand player of the year and the Tom French Cup for top Maori player.

The last Aucklander to win the Kel Tremain silverware was Jerome Kaino in 2011.

Ioane, who has had a superb for the Blues and the All Blacks, is up against Black Ferns Sevens skipper Sarah Goss and Crusaders captain Sam Whitelock. Ioane has scored 12 tries in his 15 games for Auckland from 2015-16.

Goss is a finalist for the women’s player of the year along with Auckland Storm and Black Ferns prop Aldora Itunu.

Tyla Nathan-Wong is up for the Black Sevens player of the year, which she won in 2015.

Former Auckland loose forward DJ Forbes, now retired, is a nominee for the Richard Crawshaw Memorial All Blacks Sevens player of the year, an award he has won thrice.

Jack Goodhue, head boy of MAGS in 2013, was rewarded for a fine season with Northland by being named as a finalist in the Duane Monkley Medal for Mitre 10 Cup player of the year.

Canterbury wing Braydon Ennor, who played centre during his school days for St Kentigern, is a finalist for the age grade player of the year, for his feats with the all-conquering New Zealand Under 20s.

The Blacks Ferns and New Zealand Under 20s, both of which included a clutch of Auckland players, are finalists, along with the Crusaders, for adidas team of the year.

The ASB Rugby Awards will be held on Thursday December 14 at the SKY City Convention Centre.
