THE PROGRAMME

The focus of the programme is to prepare the players for the next stage of their rugby careers (NZ20, Bunnings Warehouse NPC, FPC and ultimately Super Rugby, All Blacks and Black Ferns). The NZRU 6 Pillar Development Model provides a framework from which Auckland delivers a progressive development programme that is converting 80% of Academy players to the NPC and FPC.

There is a strong holistic approach throughout the programme, recognising the need to develop the players, both on and off the field. There is an expectation that players have their drivers licence, access to reliable transport and are consistently making healthy choices with their food.

Nutrition, Mental Skills, and Personal and Professional Development are integrated in with the on-field development, to ensure that when the progression to professional rugby takes place, the players have the knowledge, tools and confidence to perform at that level.

All players are required to undertake meaningful work or study during their involvement with the High Performance Academy, which is endorsed by the New Zealand rugby players Collective Employment Agreement.

THE PATHWAY

Players are contracted to the High Performance Academy on Provincial Union Development Contracts. Since 2010, we have averaged an 80% conversion to NPC and FPC and 60% to Super Rugby. Of those players who gain selection to NPC and FPC, 90% of them are doing so within three years of finishing school/entering the programme. Along the way players are also striving to make the New Zealand age-group sides.There is a strong emphasis on ensuring players understand the expectations of what they are aspiring to and have a clear understanding on how they are going to achieve their goals. It is tough and involves a considerable amount of hard work, commitment, discipline, honesty and passion. Characteristics that are driven from the values of the Auckland Rugby Union.
