In Loving Memory of Don McKay


Don McKay, a cherished Life Member of Auckland Rugby Union and the esteemed North Shore Rugby Club, passed away on February 6th, 2024. He was the oldest life member at North Shore Rugby Club and leaves behind a legacy of remarkable contributions to the sport.

Don's outstanding career saw him don the black jersey of the All Blacks in 12 matches, including 5 tests during the early 1960s, scoring an impressive 18 tries.

As a proud representative of Auckland Rugby he played a pivotal role in Auckland's first era of Ranfurly Shield dominance, including the iconic 19-18 Ranfurly Shield win over Canterbury in 1960.

Off the field, Don's dedication to rugby extended beyond his playing days. He continued to serve the sport as a coach, mentor, and committee member at North Shore Rugby Club. His passion for nurturing young talent and fostering a sense of community within the club earned him the utmost respect and admiration from all who knew him.

During his overseas endeavours, Don shared his wealth of knowledge and expertise, coaching teams such as Harlequins in London and contributing to the development of youth rugby at London Welsh.

Don McKay's legacy transcends the boundaries of the rugby field. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend, cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His kindness, integrity, and indomitable spirit will be dearly missed but forever remembered.
