Four Auckland players are set to don the black jersey of the New Zealand sevens teams, earning the call up after impressive form at the National Sevens last weekend.
Rocky Khan is the sole representative in the men’s team, after guiding the Auckland men to the plate title at Nationals.
Khan previously played for the All Blacks Sevens team in 2013 and received the call up again late last year for the Dubai and Cape Town legs of the World Series.
Interim All Blacks Sevens Head Coach Scott Waldrom said selections were based on performance at the recent National Sevens tournament.
“We said that the guys performing well would be the ones rewarded with selection. We are confident that this squad contains the best sevens rugby players in the country at the moment,” said Waldrom.
Tyla Nathan-Wong, Niall Williams and Theresa Fitzpatrick have all been awarded Black Fern Sevens contracts, the three were in the Olympic medal-winning team last August.
The Black Fern sevens have five tournaments in 2017, starting with the Sydney leg in two weeks.
Black Ferns Sevens Head Coach Allan Bunting said he was excited about the mix of talent in the team.
“There is a lot of potential in this team. The high level of performance at the National Sevens tournament on the weekend made selections very hard. The higher standard of coaching at Provincial Union level is really making our job difficult which is great, but we are lucky because they are delivering quality rugby players which will make coaching the squad easier,” said Bunting.
