Club rugby kicked off last weekend with a festival of rugby hosted at Waitemta Rugby Club.

14 premier teams did battle in the first official hit out of the season. teams were split into Pollard Cup and Waka Nathan challenge Cup rounds in what were effectively quarter final matches for the silverware.

This weekend we host the semi-finals for each Cup.

Previous winners Ponsonby and Papatoetoe will do battle after both looking impressive last weekend. They have both previously won the Waka Nathan Challenge Cup on two occasions.

On the other side of the city Waitemata will host Suburbs as the west Auckland clubs aim towards their first Waka Nathan title.

Defending Gallaher Shield champions Suburbs, looked dominant in their opening round match, while Waitemata ran away with a late victory over Marist.

In the Pollard Cup University will host Eden after sitting out with a first round bye. East Tamaki and Waitakere City will do battle in the other semi-final.

Elsewhere, teams who suffered losses last weekend will play pre season matches, and Premier Development and Under 20s will also be in action across the Union.
