Unsung Hero: Pulotu Selio Solomon

For Pulotu Selio Solomon being involved at Marist is so much more than what happens on the field.

Solomon is this week’s Unsung Hero.

The current Vice President of Auckland Marist joined the club after finishing school and got involved with the committee about eight years ago.

“Some players at the time approached me and asked me to be involved,” said Solomon.

“We had a player population that was largely Pasifika and it was an opportunity for me to represent them on the board.”

Solomon said it felt like a natural progression to get involved at the level and before taking his current position, served as chairman.

He believes the club as a social obligation to look after their members, beyond the rugby field.

“Players come to the club and it’s not just about rugby. We look out for them and their family, we look after the whole person,” said Solomon.

Marist General Manager Andrew Va’a echoed that sentiment from Solomon.

“He has voluntarily assisted with many club ventures and through his connections, we have been able to find education and employment opportunities for many of our players,” said Va’a.

“He is well regarded by the players and has built a reputation as a loyal supporter not only for the teams on the field but also in the clubhouse as well.”

It’s no surprise that Solomon’s highlights are not on field successes from teams, but more so things behind the scenes.

“Seeing our player numbers grow, establishing a clear structure within the club and seeing the club spirit,” said Solomon.

This weekend Marist host Ponsonby in an old-school traditionally rivalry. Solomon will be there, he said he aims to be a visible board member and enjoys spending time with the volunteers and those putting in the hard yards to make the game we love, so great.

Pulotu Selio Solomon is one of those volunteers. He is why our game is so great.
