Kelston Boys’ win Condors Under 15s title

Kelston BHS has flown the Auckland flag high at the weekend’s iconic Condor Sevens tournament at Sacred Heart College.

The west Auckland school’s Under 15s side won the boys’ section of that age division in unseasonally hot conditions. Coached by Matt Howling and Fred Tavita, Kelston defeated New Plymouth BHS 19-10 in Friday’s final.

Soane Mapa Junior scored a double, as he did in the 24-12 semifinal victory over Westlake BHS. Earlier, Kelston had eliminated hosts Sacred Heart.

Mapa Junior, Sione Tapuosi and Asolelei Fretton all made the tournament team from Kelston, while Sacred Heart’s Blake Makiri was adjudged MVP and was among that team. Other Aucklanders included the King’s pair of Chicago Doyle and Piki Mihinui, St Peter’s player AJ Falefaga and Sacred Heart’s Grady Walshe.

Kerikeri HS of Northland won the Under 15 girls’ division, pipping Hamilton GHS 21-20.

Aucklanders in the girls’ tournament team were Howick’s Abby Lockhard and Aorere’s Melvina Weilert, whose side was knocked out 17-0 by Kerikeri in the semifinal.

The Hamilton schools – Girls’ High and Boys’ High – won a notable double, as they did in 2015, in the open competitions played on Saturday and Sunday.

Hamilton GHS beat Christchurch GHS 20-5 to win their final, while Hamilton BHS defeated Scots of Wellington 21-10 in their decider.

Sacred Heart won the consolation final in the open boys, edging Kelston BHS 17-14 thanks to a late 60m solo try by First XV captain Lemeki Namoa. He made the tournament team. In the quarter-finals, Hamilton BHS had shown their quality in blanking Kelston 35-0.

Schools sevens returns to the same venue on December 16 for the World Schools Sevens event for invitational teams, mostly from the Oceania region.
