Auckland Thunder go unbeaten at NZWIT

The Auckland Thunder impressed with three solid wins against Northland, Counties and Taranaki at the NZ Women's Rugby Invitational Tournament on Saturday.

The young squad built their victories on the back of determined defense, only conceding one try throughout the tournament.

Northland were dispatched 19-5, before Counties were beaten 20-0. In their final match the Thunder defeated a near Farah Palmer Cup Taranaki team 12-0.

The Thunder's player of the tournament, lock Ima Tavaga, set the offensive platform. Displaying a big engine, her strong carries frequently got the Thunder on the front foot and provided opportunities for the backs to exploit.

A dominant scrum, led by prop Agnes Oneone, ensured the Thunder backs had quality ball and frequently had their opposition peddling backwards.

In the backs, young second-five Sapphire Abrahams impressed with her power running and kicking game. Centre/wing Melodie Kapiya and wings Lara Diamond-Brahne and Corona Nanai also showed their class with elusive running and strong defense.

Throughout the day the experience of halfback and captain Margarette Nena was the glue that maintained structure and composure at both ends of the field.

"I was impressed with the grit and determination of our young squad as well as their skill sets,” Nena said after the final match. "There's a lot of talent coming through. The future of Auckland Women's rugby looks very bright."

The Thunder play Northland on September the 1st.
