22 Auckland Rugby players have been selected to play in the Sky Super Rugby Aotearoa competition in 2021. The premier rugby competition in New Zealand will begin on February 26.
The Auckland Rugby players selected are (players in bold are debutants):
Blues: Soane Vikena*, Alex Hodgman, James Lay*, Marcel Renata, Ofa Tu’ungafasi, Patrick Tuipulotu, Blake Gibson, Akira Ioane, Hoskins Sotutu, Jonathan Ruru, Harry Plummer, TJ Faiane, Rieko Ioane, Tanielu Tele’a, Caleb Clarke, AJ Lam*, Zarn Sullivan*.
Chiefs: Angus Ta’avao.
Hurricanes: Scott Scrafton, Simon Hickey, Salesi Rayasi.
Along with 22 Auckland Rugby players selected, four will be looking to make their Super Rugby debut. Soane Vikena, James Lay, AJ Lam and Zarn Sullivan have all been included in the Blues squad for the 2021 competition and will be hoping to make their debut performance for the franchise.
All Blacks Alex Hodgman, Ofa Tu’ungafasi, Patrick Tuipulotu, Akira Ioane, Hoskins Sotutu and Caleb Clarke will rejoin the Blues franchise and Marcel Renata, Blake Gibson, Jonathan Ruru, Harry Plummer, TJ Faiane, Rieko Ioane and Tanielu Tele’a will carry on their form from their Mitre 10 Cup season to join the squad.
Eden Prop, Angus Ta’avao will rejoin the Chiefs after sitting out most of the 2020 Super Rugby Aotearoa season due to injury.
Grammar TEC teammates, Scott Scrafton and Simon Hickey and Marist Outside Back, Salesi Rayasi will return to Wellington to help bolster a strong Hurricanes squad.
Round 1 of the Sky Super Rugby Aotearoa competition will begin on February 26 with the Highlanders taking on the Crusaders in Dunedin and The Hurricanes facing the Blues in Wellington on February 27.
